Giving Thanks in 2009!

During this holiday season the Wade Family Foundation teamed up with Challenger Elementary School to donate can foods and water to St. Mary’s Food bank.  Challenger did not plan to do anything out of the ordinary for the 2009 can food drive however ended up doing extraordinarily!  Just as most schools in the Phoenix area Challenger asked their student body to participate in giving and bring in can goods. The Wade Family Foundation offered to donate incentives to encourage the students to give despite what they may not have (93% of the student body receives a free or reduced lunch). The incentivesdsc00413 were as follows: 1st place = IPOD Nano, 2nd place = $75 Best Buy gift card and 3rd = $50 Best Buy gift card and they seemed to have made a difference. The total number of items Challenger collected was 9,147! They collect approximately 8,000 more cans than Coyote Ridge, Landmark, Discovery, Horizon, Mensendick, and Desert Garden!  Obviously all of the students put in a tremendous effort which resulted in such big turnout however there were several individuals that went above and beyond with their generosity.

dsc00418The 1st place award went to 5th grader Alyssa Sifuentes (left). She collected 1,051 cans on her own! Making her the proud recipient of the IPOD NANO!

2nd place went to 7th grader Derek Jacob (right)!dsc00414

3rd place went to 5th grader Bianca Ramirez (below, left)!

We give honorable mention to Ms. Wilson’s homeroom class for bringing in the most cans as a class/team effort! We also give a special thank you to Ms. Clark’s class who housed all of the food and brought in can goods despite being exempt from the prizes.  Thank you Challenger students and staff for making this effort a great success!

At Pendergast Elementary School the Four ACE’s are broken down as follows:  the Ace of Hearts is an anchor or parent, the Ace of spades is high expectations, the Ace of Diamonds is the opportunities for success and the Ace of Clubs are other caring adults. “The purpose of the club is to impact the school atmosphere while developing social skills and encouraging the academic success of young females. It is important that young girls have knowledge of things that bring them true empowerment: education, a sense of purpose, confidence, compassion and humility.” There are essential adult relationships that are needed for children to succeed and the Wade Family Foundation is honored to be an official Ace of clubs, other caring adults, for the students of Pendergast.(www.pesd92.org/schools/pend/index.html)

The Wade Family Foundation, UpRise Youth Challenge, and several guest speakers joined the student body and staff at Pendergast Elementary School to celebrate “Red Ribbon” week on October 30, 2009!

Pendergast Student Council (pictured to the right) implemented activities throughout the week to demonstrate the schools support of the “Red Ribbon”student-council concept of making good decisions and being drug free. They also did a wonderful job leading the assembly in which we participated. We give a special thank you to Michael Woolsey, Principal of Pendergast and to the student council, excellent work!

The rally started off with a specail student recognition, follwed by a very entertaining ”student teaches teacher” dance contest! Soon it was time for  Kenny Dobbs to impress everyone with his high flying stunts, but before he crop-pic-james-kenny-bobbydid James of the Wade Family Foundation shared how He and Bobby Wade, Founder and C.E.O., met Kenny. He spoke about how they met Kenny when he was a troubled young man and how they attempted to persuade him to make better decisions for himself and his future. Then Kenny spoke briefly saying that he agreed with them at the time but chose not to make a change at that time.  Kenny had more to say but first “the slam dunk inventor” was scheduled to take flight! Kenny performed high flying stunts involving many including the Pendergast student council and several young children from the audience. The enthusiasm was amazing everyone was shocked and heartened by his performance! After Kenny shared his slam dunk skills itimg_5541 was time to share more of his story. He spoke about his childhood growing up in gang and drug influenced neighborhoods and how making bad decisions in his youth resulted in unfavorable consequences. He also expressed how he learned from it and now chooses to live by the C.D.C. formula and share it with others. Kenny proclaimed how important it is for each student to embrace the concept and live by it now.  Following the dunk show and Kenny’s speech the students were fired up and the lesson that the Wade Family Foundation dup-dunkcame to deliver had just begun!
